NeverTheLess – May 28, 2017

Welcome to All, especially if you are visiting us today.  We are delighted to have you here. Nametags are an outward symbol of radical hospitality.  We have new people in the church and an uptick in our visitors.  Wearing a nametag helps everyone!  If you don’t have one, please see an usher or a greeter for assistance.  If you are visiting, we also invite you to fill out a pew card and put it in the plate.

Thanks to all!    from Anna:  Thank you to everyone who participated in our Joy-full Celebration last Sunday.  Thanks to everyone who planned, organized, made phone calls, moved walls, tables, chairs, set up, cleaned up, gave gifts, wrote notes, brought food or just generally participated to celebrate Charles’s ministry among us.  We are blessed to have such faithful people in our parish.   And from Jenny Bruce:  Thank You—It truly does take a village to send a loved one off to a new beginning.  A big thank you to everyone who helped in any way to make Charles Joy's send off a memorable one.

Contemplative Service   Join us this evening at 5:00 p.m. for the last contemplative service before summer, where we will celebrate the Feast of the Visitation.  This service features reflection on biblical and poetic readings, and quiet time, accompanied by gentle music.

Community Supper   St. James the Less will host the community supper again this evening, after the Contemplative Service. This gives us the opportunity not only to extend hospitality to our neighbors once more but also to help out our friends at St. Ann’s who would normally host but are unable to this time.  Sign-up sheets for volunteers and food are at Information Central.  All are welcome.

Updating Your Contact Information   We have learned recently that Verizon has opted out of the email business, which means for many of you we no longer have a good email with which to reach you.  Please remember to let us know when any of your contact information changes so we can stay in touch.   Call or email the office with your new information.  Thanks!

Requesting Backpacks and Grocery Bags   Peter Paul Development Center would appreciate some replacement backpacks for their youngsters; the ones given out last Fall are wearing out. Yancey Jones, through his connections for the SJTL Food Backpack Ministry, has a source for backpacks that only cost $10.00.  If you are interested in contributing to the request from PPDC, please make checks out to St. James the Less and note SJTL Backpack Food Ministry on the memo line.  Thank you for your continuing support.  And speaking of the Food Ministry, there is a bin in the hallway outside the parish offices to collect paper grocery bags (no plastic please).

CARITAS—Volunteer Drivers Needed   Our collaboration with St. Ann’s also includes providing transportation for CARITAS guests when that parish hosts at the end of May/ beginning of June. Duncan Memorial is part of this rotation, too. We need volunteers to drive our van May 30 & 31 and June 1, 5, 6, 7 & 8 from 6:45 -9:15 p.m.

Feeling Hospitable?   Parish Life is seeking to expand its stable of volunteers for a variety of receptions and other activities we host at St. James the Less. This is a behind-the-scenes ministry of hospitality we extend to one another and guests of the church. If you enjoy planning a menu, setting a table, shopping for food, preparing food, setting up accommodations, or organizing the people who do, your help would be greatly appreciated! Please contact Dawn Davis at

Graduating Seniors    Does your family have a senior graduating from high school, college, or graduate school, this spring?  We want to celebrate this milestone with you.  Please call or email Margaret in the office with the name of the student, where s/he is graduating from, and future plans, if they are known.  We’ll publish the list in the bulletin on June 11, which is also High School Youth Group Sunday.

Would You Like Help    getting to church on Sunday?  We would like to make Sunday worship services more accessible to those who may be unable to drive by offering transportation to SJTL. If you are interested in this offering for yourself, a friend or a neighbor, please contact the church office by email or calling 798-6336.

In Case of Pastoral Emergency:   Anna is on-call 24/7 for pastoral emergencies.  If you would like to speak with her about a pastoral matter at any time, she is available to you.  If it is during regular business hours, please call the church office. Outside of regular business hours, please call the rectory at 804.299.3730. If there is no answer there, you may contact Senior Warden Yancey Jones 804.393.9901 or Junior Warden Rebecca Cline 804.683.0081.
