TODAY AND COMING SOON

Fourth Quarter: The Center for Elder Spirituality    The Fourth Quarter of our lives asks much of us – how will we use this time?  Please check out our new bulletin board in the hallway, where there are brief descriptions of our courses and activities.

Memorial Service for Tom Street   Saturday, October 27 at 2 pm.  Reception to follow at the family’s home, 316 S. James St.  Please bring a favorite finger food to share.

All Hallows’ Eve (Observed)  Join us at 6:30 pm on Sunday, October 28 for a Youth-Led, All-Welcome Service.  Wear comfortable shoes, much of the service will take place off-site.

Loved Ones Not Forgotten    If you would like your loved one(s) remembered on All Saints Sunday (Observed), November 4, please call 798.6336 or drop a note in the office by Wednesday, October 31.  Your loved ones' names will be included in a bulletin insert on All Saints Sunday.  

A Visit with The Most Rev. Dr Daniel Sarfo, Archbishop of the Internal province of Ghana and Bishop of Kumasi, who will join us on Sunday, November 4 to celebrate.  In honor of this visit, we will have only 1 service, at 10 am.  Please plan to join us for this great honor.

Community Call to Prayer and Communion Service   the Ashland Area Clergy Convocation invite you to participate in a service of prayer for our community and our country, 7 pm, Monday, November 5, here at SJTL.  All are welcome, invite a friend to join us.

OUTREACH and COMMUNITY

EMPTY BOWLS - A SJTL Food & Backpack Ministry Event   NEW DATE:  NOVEMBER 10!   Choose a hand-made bowl to fill with soup.  Keep the bowl as a reminder that there are always empty bowls around the world.  Tickets for this event are $30 each and are available at re-funk-it, at The Supply Room Company, or here in the office at SJTL.  Contact Margaret to reserve your ticket. 

CARITAS October 20-27, 2018   This year we are hosting families who are temporarily homeless. We will have 15-30 folks, mothers and/or fathers, and children, to care for every night. It will take our whole village to show them care and give them a great week.  You will find sign-up sheets at Information Central for opportunities to Volunteer your time to make our guests feel welcome. Sign up on the sheets, or contact Dani Stockwell, 798.6548

CARITAS Volunteer Opportunities include:Evening hosts; Overnight chaperones; Set-up/Clean-up; Family activity leaders; Van drivers and co-pilots; and Laundry helpers. 

Randolph-Macon College’s The Big Event   the community of R-MC comes together to say "thank you" to the town of Ashland for its continued support. For the afternoon of Sunday, November 4, students, faculty, staff, and alumni help the community with service-oriented projects, such as raking leaves, window washing, and painting. If you would like to take part in the Big Event, please register a project via the link (https://thebuzz.rmc.edu/submitter/form/start/202273).

Brunswick Stew Time!  Join the Stew Crew on Friday, November 16 to chop up all the ingredients, and/or on Saturday, November 17 to stir the pots, or package the stew, or man the stew-through pick-up table.  Signs-up sheets to volunteer and/or purchase ($10/quart) are in the hallway.  Tell your neighbors, tell your friends!  You can almost smell it already!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Ushers    Ushering is an easy, yet vitally important, role to the smooth running of Sunday worship.  If you are interested, there is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board at Information Central, or contact Margaret in the office.  Sign up for a week, or 2, or a whole month. 

Office Volunteers   We are seeking to expand our roster of folks who are able to help out in the office during staff meetings and/or when Margaret is out of the office.  If you have an hour or so on a Wednesday morning or a free morning when Margaret is out (there will be lots of notice for such an event), please contact Margaret, 798.6336.

A WOMEN’S RETREAT

The Ash Grove at Richmond Hill invites you ... to a Women's Retreat, October 26-27, Friday at 4pm - Saturday at 4pm.  The theme is "Digging Deep: excavating generational trauma and resilience through the healing lenses of faith and hope."  Sponsored by Ashland Presbyterian Church, you may contact Pastor Kerra English, (865) 765.2944 for more information.  Registration is $120 for overnight, $90 for day attendance.  Some scholarship assistance is available; please contact Pastor English.
