C.A.R.I.T.A.S. (Congregations Around Richmond Involved in Assured Shelter) is our area’s ministry providing shelter, food, and community to a group of homeless people, church by church, one week at a time.  C.A.R.I.T.A.S. helps to break the cycles of homelessness and addiction in the Metro Richmond area so that people can lead stable lives.  They are the largest provider of homeless services in the area, innovative because the four programs strategically fill the gaps in this system.   It helps the most vulnerable among us, which makes for stronger community.

SJTL has a long history with C.A.R.I.T.A.S. and this year we will host our homeless neighbors (35 men) the week of September 16-23.  Volunteers are needed to assist with providing one meal and backup meals, where other churches haven’t signed up to cook and serveDrivers and helpers are needed to shuttle our guests to showers and a laundromat.  Overnight chaperones are needed two or more nights.  And, donations of lots of quarters ($.25) are needed for guests to do laundry.

 Specific Volunteer opportunities:

Sign-up sheets are outside the parish office on the bulletin board at Information Central.

1.  Assistance with cooking and serving is needed; one supper (tuna salad) and backup meals for lunches and/or breakfast, where other churches haven’t signed up to prepare.  Please sign up in the hall if you can help.  Marcia Hill is purchasing and coordinating these meals and can answer questions.

2.  Drivers and helpers to shuttle our guests to showers and/or a laundromat are needed Monday through Thursday, about 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.  Driving the church vans is not difficult and no experience is required; those ages 21-70 years old with good driving record will be considered.  Helpers also needed, each driver needs a second person to ride in the van.  Court Warfield will be coordinating these volunteers.

3. One overnight chaperone is needed each night.  We have asked the churches to send a volunteer if they can, if not we fill in the spaces.  So far, we have 2 of the 7 nights covered by other churches.  If you can stay the night on a great air mattress, please sign up or give us a call.  Dani Stockwell is keeping that schedule.

4. To help with the laundry, donations of quarters ($.25) will be most appreciated – those big machines just eat them up.   Any of us can collect quarters at church and give them to Court Warfield for his drivers.  Thanks!

If you’d like more information, or to volunteer, please sign up and/or contact Dani Stockwell

C.A.R.I.T.A.S. is also seeking gently used (or new) single sheets and pillowcases for the guests’ use.  And we here at SJTL are in need of washcloths for our guests’ use.  We keep a supply of towels and washcloths here while the sheets will be used by the CARITAS organization.  If you have any gently used single-bed sheets or pillowcases (they needn’t match) or some washcloths you could donate, that would be lovely!  There is a box for your donation in the hallway outside the parish office.
